American Pharoah running in Haskell at Monmouth Park, NJ Aug 2, 2015
90,000 cavernous Belmont Park fans on Saturday saw American Pharoah win the first Triple Crown in 37 years could be categorized as casual horse racing fans.


Now that history has been made, American Pharoah’s connections, starting with owner Ahmed Zayat of Teaneck, will likely do the casual fan – and thus the sport as a whole – a favor by continuing to race this great horse through the end of his 3-year-old season.

And that most likely includes the chance to see American Pharoah run in the $1 million Grade 1 Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park on Aug. 2, a boon to New Jersey horse racing. Not only does Zayat live in the state, but trainer Bob Baffert has done so well in the Haskell, the race is sometimes called the Bob Baffert Invitational.

After that, American Pharoah may wrap up his career in the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic at Keeneland in Lexington, Ky., on Oct. 31. American Pharoah could become the first horse to win what is being billed as the sport’s Grand Slam – the Triple Crown plus the Breeders’ Cup Classic.
